Woodmere is one of the most historic cemeteries in the Detroit area. Before becoming the
automobile capital of the world, Michigan became known for tobacco, lumber, and other industries.
Many who helped develop these Michigan businesses and put Detroit on the map are interred at
Woodmere. In 1896, many of the Civil War soldiers buried at Fort Wayne 's cemetery were
disinterred and reburied at Woodmere in the U.S. Army section. However, there are many Civil War
soldiers whose remains have been buried throughout the cemetery. This list is continually updated
when more names of those who played a significant part in the making of Detroit are revealed.
